Across The Pond – When quintessential England meets 1950s Americana
Zymurgorium, the Manchester based wizards of gin, have managed to successfully bottle the sweet creamy soda flavours of my childhood in a grown up Gin.
“Across The Pond” is this funky distillery’s latest creation to celebrate the birth of the newest Royal baby, with £5 from each commercial sale going to Mayhew, a charity for which the Duchess of Sussex is a patron.
The luminous green of Schweppes Cream Soda (that I grew up with) has been replaced by opulent Ruby Red from the addition of British Raspberries.
I’m not sure if it’s because the name Archie makes me think of the red headed Archie Andrews from the comics where Pop Tate’s Chocklit Shoppe is the teen hangout, but this sweet gin liqueur makes my mind wander to 1950s America, where through the magic of comic books and television my head thinks there is a soda fountain or old fashioned diner on every street corner serving Root Beer floats and homemade Apple Pie.
Served with lemonade and a twist to amp up the sweetness, this gin is the perfect pairing of British elegance and 1950s Americana. I don’t normally care much for creamy drinks, but I do wonder how this would taste with a scoop of vanilla ice cream in it (or even as a syrup drizzled over the top of a banana split!).
Definitely get yourself a bottle now as they only made a limited number, so once it’s gone, it’s gone!
