Double Dutch Tonics – in a league of their own
It feels like Gin-A-Day-May was ages ago now, but one of the days reflected on what was Iconic in the world of Gin, and while most people chose to focus on the Gin, I questioned why the Tonic always tends to play second fiddle.
For me, the tonic has just as big a role to play in the experience of a Gin as the Gin itself. We’ve moved so far away from the harsh, bitter, quinine heavy flavours of tonics of the past that I would go as far as saying that sometimes the Gin can be a vessel for the tonic.
Double Dutch are one such company who are showing the world that there is much more to a Gin & Tonic than just the Gin. If we take the tonics from their range individually I am sure we can find Gin pairings that showcase the vibrant flavours within.
For example their new Double Lemon is just the right amount of sweet and sour and would actually lend itself well to a sweet pink gin such as the new Zymurgorium Raspberry Cream Soda Gin Liqueur, or even a dry pink gin such as York’s Roman Fruits
The Pomegranate & Basil makes me think of Moroccan flavours and draws me to try it with a Rose scented gin such as the Wild Rose by Defiance.
Summery and refreshing Cucmber & Watermelon is the perfect vehicle for Eden Mill’s Botanical Project Chilli & Ginger Gin.
When I think of Cranberry & Ginger I think of American Thanksgiving and pumpkin spice flavours come to mind – pepper, cardamom, cinnamon and clove – so I would be tempted to try this with a peppery gin such as Audemus Pink Pepper Gin.
Next time you make yourself a Gin & Tonic, think about choosing the Tonic first and then finding a Gin to match and see what you come up with.
